Accidental Americans reel after Dutch court says bank may close account of retired KLM pilot

Spokespeople for organizations that represent so-called accidental Americans – long-time citizens of other countries whom the U.S. regards as U.S. expatriates and taxpayers, even though they themselves don't consider themselves to be U.S. citizens – were reeling on Thursday from the news that a court in the Netherlands has ruled that a Dutch bank may close the account of such an "accidental," who has refused to enter into the U.S. tax system.

Time magazine is latest mainstream U.S. publication to run major story on plight of America's 'accidentals'

Time magazine, one of the longest-established and best-known weekly magazines in the U.S., has become the latest mainstream media outlet to run a major article about America's so-called "accidental Americans," and their struggles to maintain bank accounts in the countries in which they live and are citizens of, as a result of the controversial U.S. law known as FATCA.

'Accidental Americans' take U.S. State Dept to court over 'unconstitutional, illegal' renunciation fee

The Paris-based Association of Accidental Americans (AAA), along with 20 so-called accidental Americans of 10 different nationalities, have filed a complaint in U.S. District Court in Washington against the U.S. State Department today, in which they allege that the US$2,350 fee the U.S. currently charges those wishing to renounce their American citizenship violates the U.S. Constitution and international law.

More Dutch banks turning away 'unintentional Americans', latest NRC Handelsblad report reveals

Two of the Netherlands' largest banks, ABN AMRO and Rabobank, are also prepared to close the bank accounts of "unintentional Americans" if these individuals "do not cooperate with the U.S. requirements" that they provide tax information numbers, such as a Social Security number, or evidence that they have entered into the U.S. system for relinquishing their citizenships, according to a report published on Friday on the news website NRC.nl.

London Times informs retired UK military officer: His 44-yr-old daughter is 'accidental American'

An advice columnist for the London Times newspaper's Money section has informed a retired U.K. Army officer who wrote to the paper that his 44-year-old daughter, born in Colorado when he was on a two-year posting there, is an "accidental American", who will have to pay thousands of dollars to sort out her situation with the U.S. tax authorities, whether she decides to retain her U.S. citizenship or renounce it.
