As growing numbers of expatriate Americans are calling on U.S. lawmakers to replace America's problematic citizenship-based tax regime with a system that's based on a taxpayer's current country of residence, the Washington, DC-based American Citizens Abroad is urging expats, members of Congress and others to revisit its most-recent research report – which ACA officials say has some of the best data anywhere on the subject. 

The Democrats Abroad has announced that it has joined the Residence-Based Taxation Coalition, a lobbying organization launched in January with a single goal: persuading U.S. lawmakers to move the U.S. to a residence-based tax regime, like most of the rest of the world's countries have.

The American Citizens Abroad Global Foundation – the sister educational and research organization to the Washington, D.C.-based American Citizens Abroad advocacy group – today is unveiling a campaign to raise US$75,000 to fund a research project that it plans to help provide the ACA and others with fresh data that the ACAGF says will help to support arguments in favor of moving the U.S. to a Residence-Based Taxation system.

Fourteen days before Christmas, as American expats around the world were beginning to pack their bags and return to the States to celebrate the holidays with their families, the American Citizens Abroad formally reiterated its concern about a recent decision by the IRS to row back on a "temporary suspension" of a regulation that permits the government to revoke or deny U.S. passports to Americans "with open National Taxpayer Advocate Services cases".

The American Citizens Abroad has unveiled a major online campaign it says is aimed at ensuring U.S. lawmakers hold hearings this fall on the “wide range of tax compliance issues” currently affecting Americans resident overseas – including the Tax Fairness for Americans Abroad Act.

Matt Stross, legislative tax counsel and oft-quoted spokesman for North Carolina Representative George Holding, is due to provide an "update" on the congressman's efforts to get his Tax Fairness for Americans Abroad Act signed into law later this month, in a webinar sponsored by the American Citizens Abroad's Global Foundation.
