For the eleventh time since International Living magazine began publishing its annual Global Retirement Index 31 years ago, the Central American country of Panama has come in at the top of the list, after having come in second for the last two years, and in first place in 2019.

It's said to be one of the biggest questions that many older Americans face, when embarking on an international remote working or digital nomad lifestyle: What should they do with their single most valuable asset: their home – keep it, or sell it?

The four-day "2021 Expats Virtual Financial Summit" wrapped up on Friday, having attracted more than 700 participants to its nine sessions, and was branded a success by spokespeople for the various companies that came together to put it on.

These included the American Expat Financial News Journal, the editor of which served as the event's moderator.

Over four days beginning on Tuesday the 26th of January, ten experts from around the world will be sharing their expertise on a range of financial topics of interest to American expats, as part of the first of what it is thought could become a series of "virtual financial summits" aimed at Americans who live outside of the U.S.

Costa Rica, a Central American country long known to be a favorite of Americans looking for a stable and agreeable place to retire, has topped International Living's annual Global Retirement Index this year, after coming in third last year and second the year before. 

International Living, an Ireland-based magazine and news website for expatriates, said it has registered a “massive”, five-fold “surge” in the number of Americans checking out its online facility that provides information on moving out of the U.S.

Portugal has leapt six places to top International Living's annual Global Retirement Index, which ranks countries around the world on their suitability for individuals who are looking to retire in a country other than the one in which they currently live.
